Use the flash when you take pictures at night, indoors, or outdoors in heavy shadows. Flash is effective between 1.6-16.7 ft (0.5-5.1 m) in Wide angle and between 2.5-8.5 ft (0.75-2.6 m) in Telephoto.
The flash setting can be changed in any Still mode. The default flash setting is restored when you exit the mode or turn off the camera (see Flash Settings In Each Mode).

For the best possible pictures, flash settings are pre-set for each picture taking mode.
